The greatest journey of his life.
"To me, golf is a moment of freedom from other aspects of life."
At 70 years old, Tom Rushing has a unique story from most golfers you might meet. He is a cancer-survivor, blind in one eye, and golf has provided him with both a respite from his treatment, and a singular focus that kept him moving forward when others may have given up. Golf became an absolute part of his healing process, and his life.
"I knew golf had to be a part of my life."
At 60, Tom decided to play golf. He discovered GOLFTEC and fell in love with the process of learning and golf lessons. Soon after, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. For nearly a year and a half, he went through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery followed by more chemotherapy. Golf became difficult, particularly after surgery when he could not manage a full swing.
"Golf became an absolute part of the healing process"
Although he loved golf, Tom couldn't make a full swing. But he discovered he could chip, and he could putt. This became part of his routine and provided a much-needed respite for his mind and body. "Golf has turned out to be very important in his life. He didn't want to just sit here at home and do nothing," said his wife, Donnell.
"I feel great when I'm playing golf," Tom said.
"The next chapter is to shoot my age."
“What I love about Tom is his attitude," said coach Doug Strawbridge. "There is a never give up attitude about him."
"Could we say that going blind in one eye and getting pancreatic cancer has helped my golf?" asked Tom. "I don't know, but I think it may have. Now, I haven’t come close to shooting my age. As I get older and I can get that score down, there is a point that they are going to cross, but I am not going to stop playing golf until I can no longer play.”

Levar
"I refused to be horrible at anything."
Invited to a tournament for his work, Levar had never hit a golf ball before. He turned to Tiger Woods YouTube videos to try to learn how to swing a golf club- he was unable to hit the ball consistently and struggled. Due to his frustration in that tournament; he looked up golf lessons and found a local GOLFTEC. He's been working with his Coach Rick Beck for several years. Levar is now a single digit handicap.
